Pikey Peak Trek

1 Day

The Pikey Peak trek is famous for its Mount Everest views. This trek explores the lower part of the Everest region. Instead of Lukla, Phakding, and Namche Bazaar, you will traverse villages like Dhap, Jhapre, and Junbesi. No Lukla flight or any domestic flights are involved in this trek.

Trekkers looking for an alternative to the busy, high trails of the Everest region should try Pikey Peak trekking. The less crowded trails, wilderness, and picturesque Sherpa villages make trekking phenomenal. You will enjoy nature, diverse landscapes, and stunning mountain panoramas.

*FYI: The Everest region, or what we call the SoluKhumbu region in Nepali words, is divided into lower and upper parts. All famous treks like Everest Base Camp, Gokyo Valley, and Three Passes are in the upper region, Khumbu. Whereas the Pikey Peak trek route is in the lower region, Solu.

Pikey Peak trek is moderate and suitable for beginner trekkers. You are most likely to find the trail empty and all to yourself. Trekking through lush forests, the trail ascends to grassland and high alpine. Once you reach the top of Pikey Peak, you will literally find yourself above the clouds.

The Pikey Peak trek is amazing in all ways. You will see rural Nepal and meet friendly locals living a slow life. Every day starts with a beautiful sunrise and mesmerizing scenery. Even though the journey ends in only nine days, every moment will be memorable and worth cherishing forever.

What to expect during the Pikey Peak trek 9 days?

The view of the stretching Himalayan range from the top of Pikey Peak is truly incredible. On clear days, you can actually have a glimpse of how vast the Himalayas are. Mountains like Everest, Kanchenjunga, Lhotse, Makalu, Nuptse, Thamserku, Mera Peak, Gaurishankar, Numbur Himal, Shishapangma, and many others are visible.

Sir Edmund Hillary, one of the first climbers of Mt. Everest, himself said Pikey Peak is the best viewpoint of Everest. The distance view provides an actual picture of the grandeur of Mount Everest. And the best part is Pikey Peak trek is not as challenging as the EBC trek.

Travelers who are in Nepal for a short vacation and looking to do something adventurous but do not want to commit to a long, demanding trek will love the Pikey Peak trek. It is a 9 days program. You can check our Pikey Peak trek map below for more information on the itinerary.

It is a multiple-day hike, so you will spend nights in small villages along the trail. This trek provides you with the opportunity to observe and experience the lifestyle of different Nepali ethnic groups, such as Chhetri, Gurung, Tamang, Rai, and Sherpa. You can also see many stupas, chortens, prayer wheels, and prayer flags on the trail.

Catch a gorgeous sunrise and mountain view from Pikey Peak. From here, you will descend to Junbesi to spend the night. The next day, hike to Thupten Choling Gompa and walk downhill to Taksindu. Further, the trail drops to Phaplu, the ending point of the Pikey Peak trek, and drives back to Kathmandu.

How to prepare for the Pikey Peak trek?

We usually talk about trek preparation because Himalayan trails require decent fitness and stamina. It doesn’t matter whether you are doing a beginner-level trek or an advanced trek. You have to walk 5 to 6 hours a day. Therefore, good fitness is a must.

Trekkers have to give themselves a few weeks to get their bodies ready to walk long hours a day during trekking, especially if you are not that physically active individual. 3 to 4 weeks of regular exercise is must before the trek starts.

If there are day hiking trails available around your home, we highly recommend doing a few day hikes. It will help mimic uphill walking and elevation gain to some extent. Likewise, daily walking, strength training, and aerobic exercise are highly recommended.

Choose the ones that you can stick to and be consistent. Your focus should be on improving your stamina, strength, and endurance.

Guide and porter

Trekking with a guide and porter is normal in Nepal. If you purchase any of our trekking or tour packages, a local guide and a porter will be included. Traveling with a guide and porter ensures a safe journey and the highest level of satisfaction.

You will definitely learn a lot about the locals and the trekking region. They will also share any hidden landmarks that you should visit while trekking. Another best thing about trekking with a guide and porter is entertainment.

Trust us, you will not feel bored at all during trekking. All of their jokes and stories will keep you amused and happy. Porters, on the other hand, help you with your duffel bag. One porter carries a duffel bag for two trekkers.

Each trekker can pack up to 9 kg, but not more than that. The rugged Himalayan trails require good balance, strength, and stability while walking. You can walk much more freely and safely without a duffel bag weight.

*Note: Trekkers are supposed to tip their guides and porters after their service so that they may approach you for that. It is customary in Nepal to tip your on-field crew as a gesture of thank you. So, kindly budget 15% to 25% of the package cost for the tip.
